He tried. He tried to resist the urge to hug her back. But he was afraid. He was afraid that if he moved at all, he would be holding her, instead of pushing her away and tearing her away from himself.
So he didn’t move.
Ekko seemed to know, as she stopped all motions as well. She even stopped speaking. Instead, she simply kept her arms around him, tight, waiting.
After what seemed like forever, she spoke again. “I’ve missed you so much, every day since I left.”
“I can’t sleep at night without your warmth. Freedom means nothing without you.”
“I can’t be just friends with you. I never stopped loving you. I need you.” Everything was blurted out all at once, in a hurry, as if she had been saving these words for the time when they would meet again, whenever that might be. She got out of bed and knelt on the floor beside him, hugging him around his waist this time, kissing him on the forehead.
And that was it.
